Black flying bug with vertical red stripe?

This bug was in my house in Dallas. It was 1-1.5" long. Head and middle section looked kind of like an ant's, but middle section was bright red/orange. Back section was long and narrow, with a bright red/orange stripe down the middle. Legs were long and orangish too. It started flying so I got scared and killed it with wasp killer. It looked like it was sparking before it died.

From your description of the red orange parts it could be one of the large predatory wasps of the genus Priocnemis. These wasps are spider hunters that paralyse their prey and then place them in a pre-dug hole. Before burying it there the wasp lays an egg on the victim. The egg will hatch out and eat the paralysed spider!
